Tree trimming and pruning
Good pruning can keep a tree healthy and out of the way for years. Here's what a trimming job should and shouldn't look like.
Trimming isn't just about looks. Taking out dead wood, clearing branches off the roof and correcting weak structure reduces the chance of a limb coming down in the next storm. Virginia Cooperative Extension points out that dead limbs are always the first to fail, and recommends having trees evaluated by a certified arborist every three or four years.
Common trimming jobs
- Deadwood removal. Taking out dead and dying limbs, especially over roofs, cars and walks.
- Clearance pruning. Lifting limbs over driveways and sidewalks, and pulling them back from roofs and gutters.
- Crown thinning. Selectively removing branches to let light and wind through without changing the tree's shape.
- Structural pruning. Shaping young and mid-size trees so they grow a strong framework. The City of Lynchburg has been doing this on hundreds of its own street trees.
What about topping?
Cutting a tree's top off to shrink it causes weak, fast regrowth and decay. If someone offers to top a tree, ask about crown reduction or thinning instead.
Branches near power lines
Limbs near the service drop to your house or the lines along the street are utility territory. Virginia law bars most work within 10 feet of an overhead high-voltage line unless the hazard is guarded, so call your electric company about branches in the lines.
Common trees around Lynchburg
A Virginia Tech assessment of Lynchburg's street trees found flowering dogwood, red maple, black locust, Leyland cypress and crapemyrtle among the most common species. Each prunes differently, so it helps to hire a crew that knows them.
The tree company prices the job after seeing the tree, what's under it and how equipment can reach it. We don't quote prices, and a number given over the phone without a visit is only a rough starting point.

Common questions
When is the best time to trim trees?
Many trees can be pruned in the dormant season, when leaves are off and structure is easy to see. Dead and hazardous limbs can be removed any time.
Can I trim my neighbor's branches that hang over my yard?
It's often allowed up to the property line, but talk with your neighbor first and don't damage the tree. For big limbs, hire a pro.
